Ghana

SAFE began as a modest pilot program in Ghana in 1993 and has expanded to 24 institutions in nine countries in 2017. The mid-career B.Sc. Agricultural Extension Degree Program in Ghana was started in 1993 in collaboration with University of Cape Coast (UCC), the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) and Winrock International.


The purpose of the SAFE program in Ghana is to contribute towards the agricultural development efforts of the country through the production of qualified human resource in the field of agricultural production and productivity of the country. The establishment of the BSc Degree Agricultural Extension Program led to the establishment of the Sasakawa Center at University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the upgrading of the Kwadaso Agricultural College (KAC) in Kumasi to a Diploma awarding institution. The Diploma program in Agricultural Extension was started at Kwadaso Agricultural College, Kumasi in 1999.

 

University of Cape Coast continues to play the role of reference institution for other SAFE program countries. Demand for the program in Ghana remains high. The program assures continued inflow of students.

Graduates from UCC and Kwadaso now occupy higher positions of responsibility in Ministry of Food and Agricultural (MOFA). Most of the graduates also attained supervisory positions at District Development Officers (DDOs), who supervise the Agricultural Extension Agents (AEAs). They constitute pool of true agents of change and are providing the needed leadership to move agriculture forward.

 

More than 1,150 mid-career students benefited from the SAFE program in Ghana including 1,135 graduates since the inception of the program. In addition, thirty two (32) students have benefited from the SAFE scholarship in Ghana.

Vision 2020

Effective extension delivery systems in Sub-Saharan Africa that are based on farmer needs and demands along the entire agricultural value chain, with a special focus on smallholder farmers, most of whom are women.

 

SAFE Mission

Strengthening agricultural education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa to provide demand driven, value chain oriented, training for mid-career agricultural advisory workers.
