University of Segou, Mali

The University of Segou was created to bring the population of the region varied academic training adapted to local opportunities. With the support of SAFE, a three-year Bsc. program in Agricultural Extension was launched at the University of Segou in 2015 academic year. The location of the university in Segou region is very strategic because the region is well known for several farming activities and notably the agro-pastoral production system.

Purpose of the SAFE program at University of Segou is to contribute towards the agricultural development efforts of Mali through the production of qualified human resource in the field of agricultural extension required to raise agricultural production and productivity. The program will serve as a model for the Francophone countries.

SAFE and University of Segou has done many preparatory activities before launching the program, which includes:

- Training needs assessment survey,

- Stakeholder validation workshop, and

- Curriculum development and validation.

The needs assessment study was carried out in three districts of the Segou region. The general objective of the study was to analyze the training needs of beneficiaries of the SAFE program oriented to value chain in Segou region. Employers showed interest for value chain oriented program as a means of capacity building for their staff. The study helped to identify different actors involved in implementing agricultural value chains oriented extension training.

University of Segou has produced a value chain-oriented curriculum so as to produce well-trained agricultural extension staff that can work to improve the livelihoods of small holder farm families.

The actual process of developing the curriculum involved: task team meeting to design needs assessment tools and agreeing on a survey plan; conducting the survey and writing the survey report; task team meeting to design the curriculum; curriculum validation workshop involving representatives from employers and different partners, IPR/IFRA and Samanko.

After the new curriculum is approved by the university senate, the university admitted the first batch of 22 students (21 males and 1 female) in 2015.
