“No better time than now to thank SAFE”, Mesele Yilma

Mesele Yilma is member of Kulgize Birhan (translated “Always Light” in Tigrigna language) Modern Irrigation Cooperative in Harle post, Alamata Raya district of Tigray regional state. This cooperative covers 70 acres with 52 farmers, of whom 17 are women.

A father of two children, Mesele said: “I own 1.2 acre of plot. I grow onion and tomato. I have three harvest seasons, and thanks God I don`t have to depend on the rain. Last year`s harvest was onion, and now it`s tomato. Last year`s onion yield this time met very good valueat 20 birr per kilo and overall gave me a good profit, more than 50,000 birr (roughly 2.500 USD).”

He added that tomato`s yield is more lucrative and involves less labor, saying his tomato plot engages six to eight farmers a day, whereas growing onion demand 20 personnel a day.

Mesele noted that this season his and neighboring plots have been hit hard by tomato disease, and this has been exacerbated by the difficulty of accessing the cure or the unaffordable price. “Thanks to Sasakawa Africa Fund for Extension Education`s (SAFE) Farmer Based Organizations (FBOs’) program intervention and provision, my tomato yield has been saved from total damage, and next harvest season would have been starting all from a scratch”.

According to Mesele, SAFE has also given these cooperative farmers short courses and arranged meetings with other Woreda (district) level farmers for experience and information sharing, helping this cooperative to move ahead in a positive trajectory.

“No better time for us to thank Sasakawa than this very time of unprecedented drought even though we are sad for the other communities affected. Had it not been for this irrigation cooperative realized by Sasakawa, same fate would have awaited us extending our hands for daily rations let alone feeding others. It has saved our livestock too. First worth of irrigation is resisting drought.”,Mesele said, adding: “my capital could sustain me and my family for two years to come if God forbid any misfortunes were to occur. I even own two houses with steel roofs.”
