Wollo University, Ethiopia

 
 

Wollo University is one of the new universities in Amhara region, which is established in 2007. The university is based in Dessie town, which is located 400km from the capital Addis Ababa. 

One of the main goals of the university is to create a competent, motivated, adaptable, and innovative workforce for the country who can contribute to poverty reduction, social and economic development through facilitating demand-driven, high quality education and training, relevant to all sectors of the economy.


The mid-career program at Wollo University was launched in 2013 academic year with an intake of 29 students (including 9 female students).  The launching of the program was preceded by pre-launching workshop at Wollo University. The pre-launching workshop was particularly important for introducing the program to all the university departments involved in teaching the program and to agree on implementation modalities. The workshop also provided a platform for university communities and employers to tie the loose ends in readiness for the new program.

 

Purpose of the mid-career program at Wollo University is to contribute towards the agricultural development efforts of the Ethiopia through the production of qualified human resource in the field of agricultural extension advisory services who can serve the needs of smallholder farm families.


The program at Wollo University has completed four full cycles with the graduation of 34 students of the 3rd intake group in July 2017. Currently, 18 mid-career students (16 males and 2 females) are enrolled.

Wollo University is now implementing the new value chain-oriented curriculum while the old curriculum was production-focused, the revised curriculum has a strong component of value addition.

Vision 2020

Effective extension delivery systems in Sub-Saharan Africa that are based on farmer needs and demands along the entire agricultural value chain, with a special focus on smallholder farmers, most of whom are women.

 

SAFE Mission

Strengthening agricultural education institutions in sub-Saharan Africa to provide demand driven, value chain oriented, training for mid-career agricultural advisory workers.
